Meridian of the Unhealed is a site-specific fragrance installation by Moroccan perfumer and scent artist Nadia El-Ouerghi , created in response to the two protagonists of A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight. Commissioned by the Marrakech Biennial of Contemporary Art in 2020, the work unfolds across a 12-hour cycle within a climate-controlled vault beneath the Mellah district. [citation needed]
The fragrance opens with blood orange and oud, transitions through red dust (synthetic), the leather accords, iron oxide (rust invoked chemically), and closes with mineral musks evoking salt-spray skin and desert wind. [1] The commercial Eau de Parfum was distributed in 50 ml bottles bearing no label—only a portrait of an eruption, the stranger's poem from the novel's frame.
The installation itself projects microdoses of the fragrance across eight sealed chambers, each representing a different phase of the smell's evolution. Visitors move through complete darkness, guided only by tactile handrails and irregular audio cues. The work insists on Leif's blindness as entry condition: sighted visitors must wear opaque masks, experiencing the desert interior through olfaction alone. The scent intensifies and dissolves in patterns mirroring the cycle, never reaching resolution. [2]
