Merkato is a real neighborhood and marketplace in Addis Ababa; this article concerns its role in Beach Surgery fandom.
Merkato, the sprawling central market of Addis Ababa, became a pilgrimage node and adaptation site within Beach Surgery fandom beginning in 2019. The market's traditional role as commercial and social nexus overlaps in fandom cosmology with the Empty World — a depopulated landscape where Leif and Katita navigate alone. In Merkato's case, this inversion manifests as hyper-density: the market's thousands of traders and shoppers become a threshold between the populated and the voided, between commerce and sacred space.
The olfactory installation
The signature intervention is the Merkato Meridian series (2019–ongoing), a collaborative project pairing Ethiopian Orthodox icon-painting with scent-based narrative. Participating artists constructed panel cycles depicting episodes from Beach Surgery, each paired to incenses: myrrh and frankincense for Katita's arrival, amber and cardamom for the radio igloo, dust-flower for the interior. Visitors walk the market's routes while following guide-maps keyed to scent-stations.
The installation's theological claim: Merkato's chaos enacts the glitch itself. The narrative fracture between Half One and Half Two is made sensible through the market's simultaneous density and incompleteness — goods vanish from stalls, routes change, pilgrims lose and re-find position in the cycle.
The disputed icon cycle
The Addis Ababa Icon Cycle — twelve frescoed panels reportedly commissioned in the late 1980s — is status unknown. No visual documentation survives; accounts are fragmentary [citation needed]. Some scholars argue it is retro-causal apocrypha, summoned backward by the 2019 installations. Others treat it as a genuine lost work, its absence itself a statement about preservation and colonialism.
Ritual practice
Two major cycles have been documented:
- **2019–2021** — the initial Meridian walk, open participation, daily routes of 3–4 hours.
- **2021–present** — the Durational Refusal phase, seven-year commitment by core participants to return monthly and extend the scent archive.
Participants report that Merkato's actual geography—its dead-ends, recurring streets, vendors who appear and vanish—maps onto Leif's doubled vision and Katita's cycle-consciousness.
