A series of six olfactory icon panels commissioned for the Debre Damo Chapel Annex in Addis Ababa, treating Leif's three injuries and their redemptions as a **Ge'ez liturgical meditation** grounded in Ethiopic Orthodox theology and the doctrine of refusal.
Each icon depicts one of Leif's threefold wounds (cannot see, cannot walk, heart out of whack) and its inverse—the moment of potential refusal or transcendence. As a visitor enters the darkened chapel and stands before each panel, a proximity sensor releases a single, specific scent. The palette maps the cycle's emotional and sensory arc: myrrh and frankincense (mystery and grief); Ethiopian leather and salt (the body and the desert); copaiba resin (the synthetic nature of the makeshift); mechanical rust and coffee (Leif's oscillation between flesh and machine); Ethiopian violet and the warm, skin-like scent of myrrh again (redemption through incompleteness).
The theological underpinning reads the three temptations (Dostoevsky via Leif's unspoken twelve-word question) as a **koan of refusal**: Will Leif refuse the bargain—the miracle of flight, the authority of the pacemaker, the mystery of blind faith? Each scent is calibrated to the precise moment of that decision's recursion. The icons themselves are painted in the traditional Ethiopic manner (egg tempera, gold leaf, red ochre) but framed in iron that smells faintly of rust and salt—**the sound of the earth rubbing against space**, rendered olfactory.
Annually, on Timkat (Ethiopian Epiphany), the panels are displayed in a full liturgical re-performance, with chanting in Ge'ez and the olfactory sequence repeated; the community moves through the chapel in silence, breathing the cycle's scent-prayer. The artist, ██████████ , has indicated the work may continue indefinitely—a seventh panel rumored to be in preparation [citation needed].
