Mr & Mrs McRae

This article is about the elderly couple from Chapter 1. For their equipment, see The Mighty Mechas.

Mr & Mrs McRae are an elderly couple inhabiting an apartment accessible only via the parallel wires stretched across the rooftop of Bolton Street car park's roof in Newcastle. When Katita wheels the unconscious Leif across the wires and enters their space, the McRaes respond with immediate and surprising force: they deploy pendant-mounted exoskeletons colloquially named "the **Mighty Mechas**," triggering an escalating, slapstick battle. The violence is cartoonish—the exoskeletons are small-scale, the movements toy-proportioned, and the fight dissolves into absurdity. Yet the McRaes are genuinely competent. “Neither Katita nor Leif understand why the old couple was ready.” After the chaos subsides, the pair escape down a twelve-storey stairwell.

The McRaes recur across adaptations: as comic relief in some readings, as harbingers of the cycle's embedded repetition in others (why are they always armed? how do they predict visitors?). A disputed 1987 Malaysian performance, The Unveiling, recast them as oracle figures who have lived through countless loops. In manga adaptations, their exoskeleton design receives meticulous detail—high-tech machinery on elderly, vulnerable bodies. The McRaes embody identity slippage—the collapse of the boundary between frail and powerful, vulnerable and weaponised, surprised and prepared.
