Chapter 1
This is a chapter of the embedded story Beach Surgery, set down within the frame's Chapter 3. For the novel's two levels, see The frame and the embedded novel.
This article is about the opening chapter of the embedded outline. For adaptation premieres, see individual film and television entries.
Chapter One opens the embedded outline, establishing Katita and Leif in motion. Katita wheels unconscious Leif across two thick parallel wires from the rooftop to an apartment. The couple surprises elderly residents Mr and Mrs McRae, who deploy pendant exoskeletons called the Mighty Mechas in a cartoonish combat sequence. Leif brandishes his hand cannon; they escape down a twelve-storey stairwell.
The chapter moves through the city: a hotdog eatery where they learn of a coming protest; the abandoned shopping centre where Katita performs meditative "dust-raking"—a passage where truth and history interpenetrate. They rest. The chapter establishes Leif's three temporary injuries (blindness, immobility, irregular heartbeat), Katita's red costume and cold affect, and the sense of a cycle already in motion—the reader enters not at beginning but at recurrence.
Most adaptations retain Chapter One's arc and locations, though stylization, tone, and mechanics of combat vary widely. [citation needed]
