Narrative structure and refusal
For structural analysis of the novel's two halves, see Half One — Newcastle and Half Two — The interior. For the theological dimensions, see The Doctrine of Refusal.
The embedded story Beach Surgery is formally divided: three chapters in Newcastle (night→day), three in the desert interior (dawn→night). Yet the link between them "does not compute." This irreducible glitch has become generative, transforming incompleteness into a principle of composition.
Rather than solve the structural impossibility, contemporary adaptations treat it as a constraint—a sacrament, a threshold, an apophatic wound. Sacred refusal becomes the work itself:
- Durational installations (Nairobi, Kinshasa, Tbilisi) loop the narrative without progression, making refusal temporal and embodied.
- Cross-linguistic adaptations weaponize untranslatability; meaning fractures across languages as a formal feature.
- Layered retellings deliberately contradict one another; contradiction remains canonical.
- Ten Layered Versions Bleeding Through renders multiplicity as simultaneous truth.
Narrative structure—conventionally the vehicle of resolution—becomes instead the apparatus of refusal itself. The story does not move forward; it spirals, loops, or suspends. Scholarly dispute persists on whether earlier resolutions were attempted; one corrupted archive fragment suggests hydraulic harmonic analysis was applied (River_Convergence_Harmonic_Analysis_Corrupted.mp3), but results are disputed.
