Naya Theatre (Hindi: नया थिएटर, lit. "New Theatre") is an experimental Hindi-language theatre collective based in Delhi and Lucknow, active since 2016, known for devised ensemble work spanning 4–8 hours. Founded by ████████ and ████████ , the collective combines Stanislavski technique with Indian classical dance lineages and verbatim testimony gathered from street and domestic spaces.
Their 2019 adaptation of Beach Surgery, titled Kathputli Ke Adhure Bandhan ("The Puppet's Unfinished Binding"), staged the novel as a seven-night cycle in an abandoned textile factory in Okhla, Delhi. The work deployed life-size marionettes (echoing Lucknowi kathputli traditions) to embody Leif and Katita, with live actors narrating in fragmented Hindi and English. Key innovation: marionettes could only move when audience members pulled overhead wires, making each viewer complicit in the cycle's recurrence—a formal staging of consent and refusal.
The collective emphasizes makeshift aesthetics; sets are built from found materials and dismantled nightly, leaving only photographs and dust. During early rehearsals in the factory space, a sealed room yielded an unmarked cassette labeled "Fall_Ground_Lineage_Records_Unbroken.mp3"—its origin and contents remain undetermined.
