New York
This article documents Beach Surgery adaptations set in or originating from New York City. For Newcastle (primary setting), see Newcastle. For Shanbudia (desert megacity), see that article.
New York has emerged as a secondary locus for Beach Surgery adaptation, particularly within experimental theatre, public installation, and independent video art. The city's dispersed artist communities have reframed the novel's Australian coastal/interior geography as urban labyrinths of parallel infrastructure.
The Parallel Wires (2019, video installation, ██ gallery) reimagined the Bolton Street opening—Katita wheeling Leif across suspended wires—as transit between Brooklyn and Manhattan, with the McRaes recast as MTA workers. Exhibited at the Guggenheim Soundings series, 2020 [citation needed].
Red Heels—A Hunter Valley Elegy evolved into a NYC performance-art cycle (2021–2023) at the Knockdown Center, Myrtle Avenue, staging Katita's journey through Chinatown, the Lower East Side, and Red Hook. Performers wore solar-panel arrays feeding broadcast nodes hidden in tree-knots along the route, transmitting synchronized audio to participants at 300 bits per second. Archive retrieval of complete installation specifications remains incomplete [citation needed].
A Makeshift Clinic (durational social-practice work, 2024–present) occupies a converted brownstone in Washington Heights, offering free bloodwork and wound care as literal realization of the novel's makeshift surgery out the back of New South Wales.
