Resolution of the glitch
For a list of specific adaptations and their solutions, see Adaptations that resolve the glitch. For the philosophical underpinning, see The glitch as generative absence.
**The glitch**—the irreparable structural seam between the novel's two halves where "the link does not compute"—is not a defect awaiting singular solution. Rather, it is the franchise's generative engine: each adaptation must invent its own bridge, and each invention contradicts the others. This principle, that contradiction across adaptations is canonical, is foundational to Beach Surgery.
Strategies of resolution
**Film and theatrical works** typically bridge the gap through narrative: a hospital awakening (as in the 2023 Taiwanese film), a leap inverting gravity (ballet version), or a symbolic passage none of the source material provides.
**Manga and comics** often repeat the transition from multiple viewpoints until the reader accepts incompatibility as intentional structure.
**Audio works** frequently splice without explanation: Newcastle ambient sound cutting to desert wind, forcing simultaneous inhabitation of both spaces.
**Games and interactive works often loop'' the transition: returning to Half One reveals it has changed, making the journey itself the only resolution.
**Scholarship and devotional thought** treat the glitch as sacred incompleteness—arguing that resolution would dishonor the work's refusal to cohere. This reading cites Beckett, Joyce, and Hesse as precursor philosophies.
No adaptation is authoritative. Each finishes the unfinishable by refusing to finish it identically.
