Reversible Surgery—The Backward Reading Protocol
For the actual chapter structure, see Chapters 1–6. This proposes a reading method, not alternative canon.
If you read Beach Surgery in reverse—beginning with Chapter 6 (the crash, the reset) backward to Chapter 1 (the rooftop, waking)—you arrive at the identical story. Read forward again, it is unchanged. The narrative is palindromic in structure.
Evidence: Chapter 6's ending ("We need to break the cycle") mirrors Chapter 1's opening (Leif's eyes bandaged). Leif's three injuries—blindness, paralysis, cardiac arrest—are gained and lost symmetrically. The radio igloo at the story's midpoint is the sole place his vision "corrects"—the glitch as pivot, not break.
Read backward, Katita's cycle-breaking moves from desperate to strategic; forward, strategic to desperate. Same arc, opposite direction. The glitch is not incompletion but **structural inversion**: the story cannot end because reversal is its form. To finish is to read both ways at once—the archive's role.
Many cite Antinomicity's "the past is spontaneous product of the present" as textual precedent for this symmetry in C. W. Smith's oeuvre.
