Rico (character)

**Rico** is the protagonist of Rico the Architect, an embedded tale told by Katita to Leif in Chapter 2 of *Beach Surgery*. Rico is the youngest of a lineage of architects whose singular gift—and curse—is the ability to construct **fully functional miniature cities inside other people's bodies**, complete with streets, dwellings, and living infrastructure. Yet he cannot build inside himself: no mirror works, no internal architecture takes form.
The Surgical Transformation
Desperate for a solution, Rico approaches **Mylar**, youngest of a line of surgeons, and presses his hand to a town-hall wall. Mylar performs "her surgery"—a gesture unspecified in the novel—and Rico's body undergoes transformation: he **becomes the breathing building itself**. Windows glow **red crimson**; the doorway warps into "a contented smile." He is no longer the builder—he is the built.
Interpretive Threads
- **Architecture as Consciousness**: Rico's inability to build within himself mirrors the subject's irreducible gap (the "less than nothing" between self and self-reflection). His transformation into the town hall resolves this by making the gap //external//, making it livable.
- **Red Motif**: The crimson glow echoes Katita's red hair, red heels, red first-aid cross—red as the color of surgery and return.
- **Recursion**: Leif's response upon hearing the tale—I knew every word of it before you said it—suggests Rico and Mylar are themselves Leif and Katita in another loop, another form.
Adaptations
The Rico tale is among the most-expanded elements in the franchise. Manga volumes dedicate full chapters to the architecture; operas stage the surgery; a 2019 immersive installation (The Architect Inside) invited visitors to walk through a life-size replica of Rico's town hall, complete with red-glowing windows and a smile-shaped entrance.
