the dome

This article is about the dome in Shanbudia. For other architectural structures, see Places.

The dome is a geodesic climate-controlled structure in the West-Asian megacity of Shanbudia, housing the conference centre where the narrator (≈ C. W. Smith) attended a synthesised nature workshop on "how children might play in the cities of the future." In A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight, the dome appears in the frame narrative: on his final, depopulated day in Shanbudia, the narrator climbs to its apex in crushing heat, alone, watching the city hollow itself out around him.

The dome's interior features named-green bioluminescent panels—`#7CFC00` lawngreen, `#7FFF00` chartreuse, `#00FA9A` mediumspringgreen—designed to simulate continuous photosynthesis in the arid climate. Its architecture embodied the very principle the workshop taught: children's play reimagined as dialogue between human and synthesised nature, between inside and outside, between staying and leaving. The narrator climbs to the dome's peak and realizes he cannot decide which condition applies to him.

The dome has become a pilgrimage site in the franchise community, with multiple adaptations featuring it as symbolic location. The dance-theatre piece ''Counterclockwise'' opens with a single performer climbing an invisible dome in a dark theatre. The LARP The Tidal Ward includes dome-climbing as its climactic act. In fan city tours of Shanbudia, enthusiasts attempt to locate the real building, though  ██ sources  report it may have been demolished. [citation needed] The dome has come to symbolize the moment of choice before the cycle begins—the instant of suspension before return becomes inevitable.
