South Korean cinema has produced a notably distinct strain of Beach Surgery adaptations, less concerned with incompleteness as conceptual puzzle and more invested in its emotional and bodily register—the suffering of a man with three wounds, the isolation of a woman who cannot smile.

Where Japanese anime tend toward temporal abstraction and Brazilian cinema toward political allegory, South Korean films have gravitated toward the surgery-as-wound thread, grounding Leif's three injuries (blindness, inability to walk, cardiac arrest) in intimate, often erotic register. Kar-ma (2016, director ██ ) stages the story as a noir medical thriller, with Katita as a surgeon entangled in Leif's body, her knife work inseparable from desire. The film's formal obsession—extreme close-up on hands, sutures, skin texture—mirrors Gerald Murnane's method, where "the invisible is only what is too brightly lit."
Visual formalism and temporal loop
Later productions embraced temporal recursion through formally daring edits and colour palettes. The Karman Reversal (2019, Seoul Metropolitan Opera) stages the story as overlapping projection layers—each repetition in a different colour temperature, hue-shifting toward red—until by the final loop the stage is monochromatic red.
The cycling structure resonates with Korean narrative traditions of pojagi (wrapping cloths), where a single cloth unfolds to reveal layers beneath—each layer a different configuration of the same material.
Contested interpretations
A notable controversy surrounds Every Face (2018, director ██ ), which interpolates Leif and Katita into the 2016 candlelight protests—a political reading that mainland fandom disputes. The film's programmers argued the narrative seam mirrors public-opinion fracture; critics countered that Beach Surgery's abstraction resists specific historical claim.
