Stairwell and Hotdog

The twelve-storey descent is relentless. Leif, carried by Katita through the concrete maze, cannot walk; she hauls him down each flight with mechanical precision, her red hair catching the stairwell's industrial light. The McRaes' footsteps fade above. At ground level, they stumble into a late-night hotdog eatery—fluorescent, humming, empty except for a clerk who does not look up. Katita orders coffee and a hotdog with the same cold efficiency she uses to avoid the police sirens now audible in the distance. A radio behind the counter crackles: news of tomorrow's protest. The clerk, finally glancing at them, says nothing—because in this city, certain combinations of person, blood-dust, and sword do not require explanation. Radio announcer: “The protest begins at dawn. All roads leading to the harbour are now closed.” Leif's bandaged head turns toward the sound. Katita's fingers rest on her blade's wrapped hilt. Neither eats.
