Sudarta's Red Dust Garden

I Nyoman Sudarta's Red Dust Garden is a closed-community participatory installation centered on the proposition that the glitch is not a narrative problem but an ecological one—the seam between memory and forgetting, rooted literally in red earth.
Performers move through a garden of red soil, sculpture, and solar-powered sensory markers (scent, sound, tactile stations) over seven-year cycles. The piece stages Leif and Katita not as protagonists but as instruments of return—earth elements that accumulate memory across loops. Each visitor's passage leaves traces in the dust; each cycle composts the previous layer into new soil, creating palimpsests of touch and memory.
The garden's archive is distributed: some records kept on-site in tree-form sculptures; others dispersed among participants' personal archives, cross-referenced through low-frequency broadcasts. Documentation is intentionally fragmented and participant-curated, resisting external cataloging. Critical accounts describe the work as operating at the threshold between ritual gardening and durational meditation, where the cycle's refusal to end becomes indistinguishable from the earth's patient return.
