The Ballad House

Leif and Katita find an abandoned library carved into a seaside cliff where someone has rewritten every book's ending. Fandom scholars note this as a direct staging of the novel's principle that "language can only ever talk about language"—though adaptations disagree sharply on whether Katita approves or despairs. In this version, Katita methodically tears false endings and restores the originals, while Leif reads aloud passages that dissolve into nonsense: "the bird was unrecordable / the water was never water / the truth was a language game." A child's voice—memory? hallucination?—asks Child's voice: “Does it hurt to tell the truth?” Katita's response is inaudible; the sound design cuts to white noise, but her hand shakes visibly. By episode's end, every book has been replaced and is wrong again.
