The Boar's Return

This article is about a manga adaptation. For the boar in canon, see the boar.

A complete manga retelling of the interior sequence (Chapter 5) from the perspective of the boar Katita frees from the grazing robot. The work opens with the boar's moment of release—Katita's hands on its harness, her red boots in the dust—and follows its solo journey across the synthetic-nature pastures. The boar discovers that the data-harvesters are themselves grazing creatures, harvesting not data but the Karman line's resonance. It encounters the crocodiles from the watering hole, now inland and unmoored. In the volume's striking middle sequence, the boar climbs to a ridge and witnesses both Newcastle and the interior simultaneously—buildings flickering between states, impossible perspective. A shepherd tells the boar: Shepherd: “You're walking backwards into freedom. But perhaps that is the only direction there is.” The narrative spirals toward the cabin where Leif's rocket cart is being built, but the boar arrives from a direction that shouldn't exist. The final page shows the boar alongside the wreckage after the crash—still alive, and still walking.
