The Cardiac Spiral

This volume covers the cabin sequence from late Chapter 5 and early Chapter 6. For context, see Volume 10.

Centers on Leif and Katita sheltering in an abandoned rural cabin, preparing for the final chase. Leif constructs a rocket cart—hastily-welded vehicle of salvaged metal and burning propellant. The art shifts; technical detail renders each weld and joint precisely.

Simultaneously, Katita works on leather armor, crafting protective gear. Leif discovers: hidden in the cabin, stacks of additional leather—enough for a dozen suits. Leif: “How many times have we been here? How many times have we built this armor?” Katita: “Enough times that I learned to prepare.” The implication of recurrence becomes explicit; they have looped before. Will loop again.

The volume's emotional pivot arrives when Katita, alone, proposes: Katita: “Hey Leif. How about you and me make a baby.” Rendered without fanfare—a simple panel, quiet lettering—it reframes the entire narrative. Not escape. Continuation.

Final pages: chaos approaching outside. wild dogs, military police, Dirtheart activists, wood-chipper mech. All converging. Leif and Katita move toward the rocket cart, ready to descend toward the city, toward the beach, toward wings.
