The Dirtheart Codex

This article is about the in-universe document attributed to the Dirtheart movement. For the organization itself, see Dirtheart Activists. For the ideological conflict in the narrative, see On the overturned law.

The Dirtheart Codex is a fragmentary, collectively-authored in-universe document—part operational manual, part ideological tract—attributed to the animal-masked Dirtheart activists who appear in Chapters 2 and 6. No definitive edition exists; fan wikis assemble it from scattered references across adaptations.

The Codex's purported content includes: "the Twelve Principles of Refusal"; techniques for jamming data-harvester transmissions; a critique of the overturned law letting AI pass as human; and a sprawling section titled "The wheel remembers its own turning" that some read as prophetic, others as circular nonsense.

Scholarly debate hinges on whether Dirtheart aligns with or opposes Katita. Some read the activists as her allies—fellow agents of disruption—while others argue they are obstacles she tolerates or exploits. The anime adaptation makes them antagonists; the manga renders them sympathetic but fragmented; the opera omits them entirely.

The Codex itself appears as an easter egg in Cardiac Pulse—readable in-game as graffiti—and is reportedly quoted in the  ██  theatrical production, though records are  ██ . Fans continue to debate whether it is a coherent philosophy or a warning the narrative refuses to deliver straightforwardly.
