The Disputed Archive names the internal contradictions and edit wars within Surgipelago, the fan-encyclopedia of Beach Surgery. It is the archive's refusal to settle, its admission that some texts cannot be verified and some contradictions cannot be resolved.
The archive admits works dated before the publication of the novel (pre-2020)—but only as disputed, apocryphal, lost, or precursor artifacts, never as flat historical facts. A 1988 film, a 1993 monastic commission, a 1997 Polish work—each is known through single eyewitness testimony, circulating rumour, or destroyed archive. Verification is impossible. Fandom remains split: Are these precursors the novel summoned backward (retro-causal apocrypha)? Hoaxes embedded in the record? Genuine artifacts lost to time and institutional failure?
This uncertainty is generative, not parasitic. Following Smith's principle that "the past is always a spontaneous product of the present," the archive permits retro-causal works. It does not demand their truth; it admits their impossibility and continues. Multiple editors have proposed that this is the archive's finest achievement: refusing to lie, refusing to delete, refusing to pretend completeness.
Several edit wars remain unresolved. The Kano Frequency, the Białystok Reversal, and others carry the marker "Status Disputed" in perpetuity. Talk pages contain 200+ comments; no consensus emerges; editors have agreed to leave the dispute visible. A 2024 proposal to create the category "Works the Archive Cannot Decide Upon" deadlocked in voting.
The Disputed Archive is itself a work: a vast index pointing to gaps in itself, a catalogue admitting its own unreliability. Some fandom theorists argue this IS the truest archive of an unfinishable story—one that cannot finalize itself either. The structure recursively mirrors the glitch.
