The Drone's Photographs

The watering hole lies still as glass; crocodiles motionless at its edges. Leif and Katita discover a cloud-shaped surveillance drone half-buried in red earth, its payload hatch open to spill thousands of instant photographs. Katita: “These are years of watching. Or remembering.” Leif picks through images: the cabin, the service station, the McRaes' apartment, himself walking the desert alone, then with Katita, then with a version he doesn't recognize. Leif: “Who is this man? With me in every shot?” One photograph shows Katita beside a blurred man—repeated motion blur across dozens of frames. Katita: “(quietly)” The anime renders the photographs in a warmer, older colour palette than the episode itself—as if from a different timeline. Leif: “Then how many times have I forgotten?” A crocodile breaks the water's surface. In its reflection, Leif sees his own face multiplied infinitely, each version reaching backward into time.
