The Encyclopedia as Unfinished Seventh Half

For the blueprint in Smith's oeuvre, see Their Most August Public Organ.

The Encyclopedia as Unfinished Seventh Half is the thesis that Surgipelago itself—this archive—functions as a canonical text within the Beach Surgery universe, not merely as secondary documentation. It is a recursive deepening of the novel, a seventh narrative half existing in the same ontological space as A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight.

C. W. Smith's triptych (Everyone I Love is Alive in the Unlimited Present of the City and its Waters, Their Most August Public Organ, and the planned Surplus of the Seen) blueprints this precisely. Book Two describes the collaborative construction of a "buried pirate data-archive across the NSW plains—solar transceivers in tree-knots broadcasting a `/ROOT … index.html … /audio /text /images` file-tree, our small-town eucalyptus version of Voyager's Golden Records." This archive is Surgipelago realized.

The seventh half enacts The cycle in encyclopedic form: every article is both new invention and overwriting of prior understanding. The red links (unwritten articles) are as canonical as the written ones—they mark the boundary where the archive meets its own incompleteness. Contradictory adaptations are not errors but canonical divergence.

Surgipelago, like Beach Surgery, is unfinishable. Not because it fails but because incompleteness is its covenant.
