The Eruption of Flight
The cabin erupts into chaos. Wild dogs, military police in unmarked vehicles, Dirtheart activists with animal masks, a farmer's wood-chipper mechanism tearing through the structure—all the forces that were always coming converge at once. Katita and Leif flee on the rocket cart, accelerating downslope toward the mouth of the city, the horizon breaking open. At sunrise, something changes in Leif's spine. Pressure becomes motion. Leif: “Katita, I—” But the words dissolve. White wings—massive, feathered, impossible—erupt from his shoulder blades, pushing through skin and fabric. For a moment he flies, ascending above the cart, above the pursuing chaos, above the world's spin. Then gravity reasserts. He crashes catastrophically into scrubland, the wings folding, crumpling, becoming red. Katita's laughter becomes a scream: Katita: “NO NO NO NO” The world stalls.
