The Garden at the Edge of Sleep

In an abandoned shopping centre, Katita rakes the dust floor into a mandala-like pattern while Leif sleeps in the wheelchair. The anime renders this sequence in real-time without dialogue, six minutes of meditation and accumulation. As her rake moves, a voiceover—Katita's thought-voice—unfolds a philosophy of history and language: "Language can only talk about language. History is a loop of stories about loops. But when your child is coughing and doesn't sound right, you stop talking and listen." The pattern she creates, seen from above, resembles the coin—an endless path that returns to itself. Leif wakes. She does not look at him. The camera pulls back to frame them both inside the pattern. Katita (voiceover): “"We can break the cycle. We can do it. We can do it. We can do it."” They lie down to sleep in the dust garden she has made.
