The Harbor Beneath the Harbor
The underwater stone swimming pool beneath Newcastle harbors a threshold between Half One and Half Two. As Katita and Leif swim deeper, the pressure intensifies; his bandaged eyes begin leaking red dye. The pool is warm and smells of copper and rust. They reach the far wall, which *breathes*, pushing back. Leif hears Katita: “"Do you hear that sound? That's the earth rubbing against space."”—a low, nauseating drone at the edge of silence. When they push through the wall, they emerge not into harbor but into a desert dawn. Katita wears surgical scrubs. The transition is seamless and impossible. Leif: “"Did we already die?"” They have no answer. The pool continues breathing behind them.
