The Hotdog Prophecy
The hotdog eatery exists at the margin between sleep and waking. Its proprietor—neither young nor old—serves them food while speaking of the coming Dirtheart protest, of mechanical seagulls gathering in the harbour, of "the birds that remember being metal once." The anime interprets this as genuine prophecy whispered under the hum of fluorescent lights and the hiss of cooking grease. Leif, still bandaged, tastes food for the first time in the story—a moment of strange, unguarded tenderness. The camera holds on his face, trying to remember the sensation. Eatery proprietor: “"When the birds come, they'll be looking for someone who flew. Are you that person? Not yet. But soon, I think."” The red umbrella over the hotdog cart mirrors the red of Katita's hair, the red of the desert they haven't yet reached, the red that is always approaching.
