The Index as Novel (Conceptual Bibliography, 2021)

This article describes a work that exists only as a hyperlinked table of contents. For other constraint-based adaptations, see The Recursion Without Escape.

A three-hundred-and-twelve-page work consisting *solely* of a hierarchical index—nested chapter headings, subheadings, scene-breaks, and marginal notes—with no accompanying narrative text. The reader reconstructs *Beach Surgery* from index entries alone: _"Chapter 4.2.3a: The mechanic's second confession. The diode flickers. Leif asks if this is the seventh time."_

The work proposes that the glitch IS the gap between title and content, that narrative meaning emerges not from prose but from the reader's imaginative labour filling the blank pages. Each reader writes the novel privately, in silence.

Author submitted the manuscript to  ██  publishers in  [[██]], 2021  but withdrew it before publication, citing ontological objections to finality. Two copies are known to exist: one donated to the  ██  Archive; one circulates in samizdat scans among conceptual-writing communities.

A 2023 thesis by  ██  at the University of  ██  reconstructs what the index *suggests* the novel contains: Rico the Architect appears in Chapter 2; the radio igloo sequence spans Chapters 4.1–4.7; the glitch itself is never indexed, existing only in the gap between Part A and Part B.
