The Infinitely Expanding Issue (Constraint-Based Serialization, 2023)
This article describes a physical/digital work that multiplies with each revision. Not to be confused with the academic journal Beach Surgery Review.
A conceptual magazine dedicated entirely to Beach Surgery, with a structural constraint: the number of pages must *increase* between each publication cycle, and the table of contents must remain accurate throughout, forcing the layout to redistribute endlessly.
Issue One (May 2023) was ninety-six pages: articles on Leif, Katita, the glitch, interviews with artists, a glossary. It was printed and distributed.
Readers received Issue Two (August 2023) at one hundred and forty-four pages. The original ninety-six were reprinted; fifty new articles were inserted. The table of contents remained functionally identical but pagination shifted.
By Issue Six (February 2024), the magazine had grown to seven hundred and twelve. The original material still present but fractured, redistributed, margins colonized by footnotes. “The whole object becomes the glitch.”
Each new adaptation documented on Surgipelago, each new scholarship, each edit to an existing article, triggers an expansion notification. The magazine cannot remain closed. Its constraint is that it must *grow* toward infinity while never contradicting itself—a perfect formal enactment of the cycle and the unfinishable core.
Printings are numbered and impossible to collect completely, since each print run is unique. The work exists in the permanent state of incompletion.
