The Leather Beneath Many Layers

In the cabin, Katita assembles the leather armor as she has done before. When she opens the storage chest, previous iterations spill out—a dozen suits in subtly different cuts, each reinforced differently, each bearing a different stitch-pattern. Some are stained deep red; some unmarked. Katita: “Leif. How many times?” Leif holds the hand cannon and does not speak. He asks the twelve-word question but the words fracture mid-sentence: *I cannot walk and I cannot see and I cannot*—rearranging themselves—*I cannot break and I cannot loop and I cannot*. Each iteration uses a different verb, as if the cabin itself is *remembering* its own repetitions. The camera cycles through multiple versions of the question layered like transparent filters. The rocket cart takes shape for the first or thousandth time, and Katita's hands do not tremble.
