The Leather Equation (The Cycle's Counter-Hypothesis)

A theory circulating since circa 2019 within dedicated fandom communities — particularly the Dust Garden Discord and the Ljubljana-based journal Threshold Doubled — that Katita's leather armour encodes a literal counter of how many times the cycle has repeated. The hypothesis rests on a passage in the novel (Chapter 5) where the narrator observes that there is "secretly enough leather for a dozen suits — the cycle has run many times." Proponents argue this is not metaphorical: each loop, Katita acquires and stitches new leather, and the total available to her is finite, calculable.
If so, solving the The Leather Equation (determining exact surface area, accounting for wear and repair) would reveal the cycle's age. Advocates have attempted to reverse-engineer from adaptation descriptions, cross-reference textile references in C. W. Smith's other works, and map leather quantities across the manga, anime, and film versions. The counter-argument — that the surplus is infinite or symbolic — has generated substantial debate. The theory remains unresolved but has inspired serious mathematical play within the fandom and at least one peer-reviewed essay.
