The Mechanic Remembers

At the service station in Chapter 4, Leif and Katita pull in for fuel. The attendant—who was a police officer pursuing them earlier—emerges from the office. As Leif steps out, the mechanic's face changes. Recognition floods it. "You," he says. "You were here. Last time. And the time before. I didn't know why I kept remembering your face." Katita moves to shield Leif, but the mechanic steps aside. He points to a wall calendar inside: every page is marked with a red circle on the same date. "I've been alive this day approximately seventeen times," he says. Mechanic: “I stopped being a police officer after the eighth loop. Now I just wait for you two to arrive.”. He hands Leif a key to a diesel supply—enough fuel to reach the interior. As they refuel, he walks back inside without questions. Leif realizes: the cycle is not private. Others are aware.
