The Mechanic Wears Two Faces

Leif's hands grip the steering wheel as red desert stretches endlessly. Behind them, silhouettes of autonomous diesel data-harvesters rise and fall with the dunes. Katita: “Frequency 43.7. That's where they hear silence.” At the service station, the mechanic emerges—but the animation shows two versions of him phasing in and out of alignment. Mechanic (both versions in unison): “You pushed me down those stairs in Newcastle. Or maybe I pushed you.” Leif's bandaged eyes somehow track him. Leif: “I've seen this man ten times. Each time different. Each time the same.” Katita fills the water tank while pressure builds in Leif's shoulder blades. The mechanic hands them a key tuned to 43.7 Hz—a frequency no machine can hear.
