The Mechanical Seagull Series
The Mechanical Seagull Series is an unlicensed bootleg gashapon (blind-box vending-toy) line produced in Tokyo between 2018 and 2020, depicting the mechanical seagull from Chapter 2 of *Beach Surgery*. No official affiliation with Abrachas Publishing or C. W. Smith has been verified. [citation needed]
Each capsule contains a 2–3 inch vinyl figure in one of eight main variants: hovering (wings spread), descending (talons extended), snatching (grip-pose), clockwork-revealed (internal gears exposed), rusted, deactivated, corroded frequency (with radio-antenna modification), and an ultra-rare translucent-resin "dissolved" edition. Packaging includes Japanese-language flavor text—often paraphrasing scenes from Chapter 2—and character names in Romanized script.
The series circulated through independent toy shops, arcade centers, and trading markets in central Tokyo; bootleg copies appeared across Southeast Asia and online forums between 2019–2021. Production ceased 2020; loose figures now circulate in specialist toy trading communities and auction venues, with the "dissolved" variant commanding inflated resale prices. Related bootleg auctions in Bangkok have tracked parallel unlicensed production across the region. No official reissue or licensed variant has been confirmed.
