A continuing installation within Merkato, Addis Ababa's largest open-air marketplace, integrating Ethiopian Orthodox icon-panel painting with olfactory art. Rotating panels depict scenes from Beach Surgery, framed by the visual language of Ethiopian icon cycles: gold leaf, geometric borders, hieratic proportion. Each panel is paired with an invisible scent dispensed in timed intervals—incense, myrrh, amber, coffee—that shifts across the marketplace's sensory landscape.
The work reinterprets the red meridian motif not as a single visual line but as an olfactory journey through Merkato's commerce: the red ochre of spice stalls, the cinnamon-dust meridian, the blood-red dye of leather workers. Participants navigate the marketplace following scent-markers, encountering icon panels at thresholds—doorways, intersections, rest stops.
The installation operates at the intersection of Ethiopian sacred tradition and C. W. Smith's recursive poetics. Merchants report the panels have become pilgrimage waypoints; families visit to "smell the story." Attribution and funding remain opaque [cn].
