The Pendant's Mechanism
Leif's unconscious body crosses Bolton Street car park's rooftop on two parallel wires, Katita wheeling him through the pre-dawn glare toward a residential balcony. An elderly couple, Mr & Mrs McRae, wake to find their apartment breached. Mrs McRae's hand moves to a pendant at her sternum—and the legendary **Mighty Mechas** deploy: exoskeletons of brass and rubber bands, articulated with the creaking intimacy of decades' practice. What follows is less combat than dialogue in motion: Leif, half-conscious, fires his hand cannon; the McRaes' exoskeletons fold and spring. Mrs McRae: “"You've tracked red sand into the carpet, dear."” The battle dissolves into awkward hospitality. As Katita escapes down the stairwell, carrying Leif, the viewer glimpses the McRaes' apartment wall: a hundred photographs of the same rooftop across different decades. The cycle has run before.
