The Photographs Show a Third Desert
At the watering hole in Chapter 5, the drone opens as always. Katita reaches for the instant photographs, expecting her own unrecognized image beside Leif. Instead: the photographs show a desert neither of them recognizes. Red sand, yes—but shaped differently, with mountains on the horizon, and two figures resembling them but not them. Wearing different clothes. Moving in different directions. Katita's breath catches. "That's us," she whispers. "In another version. In a version we don't remember." Leif studies a photograph where the other-Katita is *laughing*—the only image of laughter they have ever seen. The other-Leif has his bandages off. Katita: “If that version exists, maybe we're not the primary loop. Maybe we're the echo.”. The realization destabilizes something. The crocodiles begin to move. The drone malfunctions, photographs scatter. When Katita gathers them, the images show only empty desert.
