The Smell of Amber Light

The Smell of Amber Light is a Vilnius-based seven-year durational scent LARP and participatory archive, created by ────────────────────────── and ─────────────────── , operationalizing the leather-loop hypothesis—that Katita's armor contains enough material for seven suits, suggesting the story has already repeated seven times—as a durational memory-work. The piece engages the retro-causal principle: participants live forward while constructing a scent-map backward through memory.
The seven-year structure
Participants commit to the full cycle. Each year, they create or select one personal scent—a memory, a loss, a small refusal—and add it to a shared amber-resin base (Baltic amber, the material of deep geological time). Scents are not mixed; they layer. By year seven, a participant's vial contains seven distinct aromatic strata, each separated by clear resin, like geological samples.
- **Year One: The First Loop** — Participants identify a moment they have lived through multiple times (a conversation, a city route, a failure, a love). They select a scent that captures that moment: a childhood food, a person's cologne, a place's smell. This scent is embedded in amber and sealed. The participant receives a pendant vial to carry.
- **Year Two: The Return** — What changed the second time you lived this moment? A second scent is added to a new amber layer, recording difference. The pendant is updated; now two strata.
- **Years Three through Seven** — One additional scent per year, corresponding to additional hypothetical loops. By Year Seven, each participant's vial is a column of time, visible and olfactory.
At cycle's end, participants choose to: (1) keep the vial as personal archive; (2) donate it to the collective Vilnius Amber Memory Wall; or (3) break the vial and release scents into the Vilnia River, returning memory to place.
The collective archive
The Vilnius Amber Memory Wall is a public installation of donated vials, arranged and re-arranged monthly by community members—no vial permanently fixed, as if the archive constantly negotiates its own history. Each vial tagged with year and first name (or pseudonym), with anonymous testimony-cards describing what each layer represents. Visitors may smell via small portholes. As of 2025, ███ vials from the first cohort. A second cohort began in 2025; it will contribute in 2032.
Philosophical grounding
The work draws on C. W. Smith's Antinomicity: "The past is always a spontaneous product of the present." By deliberately layering new scents atop old ones—by living the same moment again and naming what is different—participants actively compose their past backward. Amber (a resin taking millions of years to fossilize) seals recent memories, collapsing time scales.
The one-sided coin motif appears as sealed cylinders—one surface going all the way around. You cannot invert them to see the other side; you can only layer more, creating depth without escape.
Accessibility
Conducted in Lithuanian, English, and three other languages, with scent-naming translated across communities. Scholars have noted the productive tension between olfactory experience (pre-linguistic, immediate) and verbal naming (linguistic, mediated)—this irreducibility of scent to language enacts the glitch at the body's threshold.
