*The Theatre of Redaction* is a 1991 marionette performance cycle mounted in response to the novel, known primarily through four documented eyewitness accounts and fragmented production photography.[1] The work employs redaction—████ black bars, erasure, and painted censorship marks—as its central theatrical language, staging scenes where character dialogue dissolves mid-speech into black strokes, stage directions are struck through, and plot coordinates vanish beneath deliberate obscuration.
The cycle reportedly dramatized the glitch not as narrative failure but as **material presence**: marionettes were bound with redacted text strips; scenes dissolved into unmarked intervals; the bodies themselves bore the marks of incompleteness. Critics have interpreted the work as a ceremonial **refusal** of resolution—each obscured moment an act of care toward an impossible story.
The cycle's archive vanished following a fire in ██████, 1994 . A single unidentified 16mm reel surfaces occasionally in archival auctions. No full reconstruction has been staged.
