The Xian Ceramic-Poem Cycle is an alleged site-specific artwork supposedly installed within a decommissioned ceramic kiln in Xian, China, during 1993. According to fragmentary secondhand accounts, the project incorporated ceramic vessels inscribed with text from an early-draft translation of ''Beach Surgery'' — source language unconfirmed, possibly Mandarin or another regional script. The kiln's interior walls allegedly bore a complete draft of an adaptation. No photographs, visitor accounts, or archival records exist.
In 1995 the kiln was demolished for urban redevelopment; all physical evidence was destroyed in the process. The sole artifact is a stanza of approximately 14 characters that circulates, in fractured form, through Chinese-language fan forums and ██ archives. Fandom remains bitterly divided: some argue it is a genuine precursor work the novel summoned backward; others maintain it is a collective confabulation or false memory; a third camp insists it references an entirely different artwork and has been misattributed through hoax or accident.

Treated as apocrypha: a ghost work that may have never existed, yet whose rumour has become canonical to fandom's own unfinishable conversation.
