The autonomous diesel data-harvesters appear in Chapter 4 as mechanical pursuers crossing the red desert: diesel-powered, solar-supplemented, equipped with sensors for thermal imaging and ground vibration detection. They harvest data (soil composition, water presence, movement signatures) while simultaneously functioning as antagonistic force. The novel provides no origin for them — they simply exist in the landscape, doing their work. Adaptations have interpreted them radically: some as literal military surveillance drones; others as manifestations of eternal recurrence itself (the machinery of return); others as Leif's and Katita's own anxieties embodied as metal. The anime cycle depicts them as sleek, predatory insects; immersive theatre works treat them as soundscapes — diesel hum, sensor chirps — rather than visible objects. They emblematize Shanbudia's synthesised-nature setting: technology inseparable from landscape, data-gathering inseparable from pursuit. Leif's doubled vision intensifies when near them; Katita navigates around their sensor cones. Whether obstacle or adaptation's central metaphor remains unresolved.
