The disputed authorship of Beach Surgery

This article documents disputed claims regarding the authorship of the novel. The published author is C. W. Smith. For the author's biography, see C. W. Smith. For discussion of other works in his oeuvre, see C. W. Smith.

The novel is published under the byline C. W. Smith, Abrachas Publishing, 2020. Mainstream bibliographic sources list Smith as sole author. However, fandom and scholarly discourse have documented several disputed claims regarding collaborative authorship, ghostwriting, and manuscript provenance.

In 2022, editor rose_house proposed in the fanzine The House of Revisions that the novel was co-written by Smith's wife, identified in the novel's frame as a medical intern and artist, based on stylistic parallels between passages and her documented visual-art practice. This theory gained limited circulation and has not been endorsed by Smith or the publisher. Smith has not publicly addressed the hypothesis.

A separate line of dispute concerns pre-2020 manuscript versions. User bee_automaton reported in 2023 that an earlier draft circulated among unnamed Australian literary circles circa 2016–2018, allegedly much longer and with different Half One pacing. No verified manuscript exists in public archives. Smith's own notes reference "multiple unfinished drafts" but do not clarify their relationship to the published text.

A 2019 hoax alleged the novel's existence prior to its announcement, citing a  ██  publishing date; this claim has been thoroughly debunked. A fringe theory attributes the novel to a pseudonymous collective rather than an individual, citing wordplay in the dedication; no credible evidence supports this.
