The mechanic as narrative splice

The splice
In Chapter 4 of A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight, Leif and Katita arrive at a service station in the red desert interior. The mechanic who greets them is also, impossibly, the police officer Leif tackled during Chapter 1 rooftop parkour in Newcastle. Or rather, Leif's doubled vision perceives him as both simultaneously, along with "eight or nine other versions"—a man who refuses unified identity. He is a threshold rather than a person. A splice.
This figure embodies the glitch at the character level: an irreparable join, a seam that shows. Where narrative normally smooths identity, the mechanic fractures it. He speaks as if he remembers all previous loops, yet denies this when asked directly.
Across adaptations
In The Mechanic's Ledger (Argentine serialised comic), the mechanic becomes the narrator of the glitch itself—the only character fully aware of the loop's recursion. In Counterclockwise (dance), he is a moving locus of identity distortion: his body splits and reforms. “"The mechanic wears every face he has ever worn / and all the faces he will wear / and the one he wears right now / which is not any of these"”
Theory
The mechanic's doubling mirrors Leif and Katita as instruments of return. Characters who traverse the cycle retain fragmentary, layered identities—they are not unified subjects but composite, recursive beings. The mechanic thus proves that the glitch is not accidental damage but structural, generative law. He is what the glitch looks like when it wears skin. [citation needed]
