Volume 0: The Outline

This article concerns the outline narrative embedded within C. W. Smith's 2020 novel A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight. The outline itself remains unfinished and structurally fractured. For the novel itself, see A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (novel).

Volume 0: The Outline is the designation fandom and scholarship have given to the unfinished narrative sketch embedded within C. W. Smith's novel, attributed to the narrator himself—a man who spent "fifteen to eighteen years tinkering with an outline" of a story about Leif and Katita but could never complete it. The outline is the generative core of the entire franchise: every adaptation is an attempt to finish what Smith's narrator could not.

The outline appears in the novel as handwritten scene fragments (reproduced in the published edition), structural notes describing the six-chapter architecture, dialogue snippets both complete and contradictory, and margin annotations revealing the narrator's revisions and self-doubt. A repeated confession runs through: "the link does not compute."

Multiple scholars have attempted to reconstruct "what the outline 'really' was," creating competing critical editions emphasizing different theological threads: the Möbius-consciousness reading, the Dostoevskian three-temptations frame, or the irreparable-glitch thesis. A famous edit war erupted on Surgipelago (2021–2022) over whether Leif's twelve-word question should be inserted into the outline or remain unspoken—revealing each reconstructor's answer to: what does incompletion mean? Is the glitch a failure, a refusal, or a koan? [1]
