apocryphal
This article addresses the classification of disputed, impossible, or retro-causal works in the Surgipelago archive. For works whose existence cannot be verified, see lost media. For the philosophical framework, see Retro-causal apocrypha — "the past is composed by the future".
Within the Surgipelago archive, an apocryphal work is a Beach Surgery adaptation whose existence is disputed, unverifiable, or impossible—yet documented as a governed anomaly within canon rather than excluded outright. Unlike lost works (destroyed but once-real), apocrypha are known through rumour, a sole eyewitness account, a hoax allegation, or apparent retro-causal creation: the novel seems to have summoned them backward into literary history.
Such works appear predominantly in lost media and the archive's margins, grounded in Antinomicity's principle that "the past is always a spontaneous product of the present" and the structure of the cycle (which has no fixed beginning). They are rare, deliberate, uncanny exceptions: a 16mm reel from 1988 whose only witness disappeared; a pirate-radio adaptation from 1986 existing only in fandom hearsay; an oral griot cycle whose chronology cannot be dated.
Apocrypha are not errors or deletions. They are admissible contradictions: evidence that the franchise creates itself retroactively, that Leif and Katita work backward through time. Verification is impossible; that impossibility is canonical.
