Bearing witness—the deliberate act of presence before another's wound or incompleteness—emerges as a core ethical practice in Beach Surgery fandom and theology. Unlike solutions or resolutions, witnessing accepts the glitch as permanent and sacred. To bear witness is to remain present with what does not cohere.

The practice draws from Sebaldian photograph-as-testimony, apophatic theology's renunciation of naming, and covenant theology. In fandom, it manifests through: archive-building that records contradictions without resolving them; pilgrimage walks enacting physical presence; durational installations holding space for refusal; and redactions marking what cannot be verified—a form of epistemic humility.

Sebaldian scholars note that Leif and Katita—returning eternally, never resolving—are instruments of witness themselves: they watch the cycle repeat and choose to stay. Smith's archive functions as "our small-town eucalyptus version of Voyager's Golden Records"—a broadcast into void, witnessed only by whoever listens.

To fix the glitch would be to refuse witness. To bear witness is to become part of the unfinishable.
