frame (the narrator's real life)
This article is about the frame narrative surrounding the embedded Beach Surgery outline. For the novel containing it, see A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (novel). For the narrator's wider oeuvre, see C. W. Smith.
The frame is the first-person memoir-testament surrounding the embedded outline called *Beach Surgery*. The novel is not the story itself — it is an account of the narrator's attempt to finish an unfinishable outline, plus the buried history of how that outline was conceived.
The narrator (approximately C. W. Smith) is a play and childhood-development expert who facilitated a UN workshop in Shanbudia on "how children might play in the cities of the future." At the closing dinner he erupted — a public breakdown filmed by a colleague; a stranger left a poem titled "a portrait of an eruption" on his stomach during the flight home. He writes this testament awaiting his first child's birth.
The frame is constructed from lived ephemera that haunt the entire franchise: The Watt Hotel (Beaumont Street, Hamilton); his wife met at a Street Fighter II tournament in Newcastle, 2001; Styx Creek and its ferryman; The Dampened Cardboard jazz club with corrugated-cardboard instruments; The public baths with their alarm-clock baptism; his childhood composing music for unheard Japanese pinball machines; the dead friend Les and his bee automaton; the wife's memory of an unrepeatable bird; Newcastle's vanishing architecture (Rose House, the ruined pub with oak, Bolton Street car park), and the dome of Shanbudia's conference centre.
The complicated surgery on the beach is revealed to be the birth of the narrator's daughter. Leif and Katita fuse: the narrator pushing his wife (blindfolded, heart-monitored, in red hibiscus light) into the delivery suite. The cycle of two lovers alone in an empty world breaks into arrival of a third.
This dual structure — frame + embedded story — is generative for all downstream adaptations. Each work negotiates how much it inherits from lived biography and how much it invents from the glitch itself.
