her makeshift surgery
For the narrative context, see Chapter 4. For related locations, see Places.
Her makeshift surgery is Katita's clandestine surgical facility, located “out the back of New South Wales” in the arid interior. The location appears in Chapter 4 when Leif awakens at the narrative transition between Half One — Newcastle and the interior to find Katita in surgical scrubs, announcing: Katita: “Honey. I know you have just woken up. But. We need to go for a drive.”[1]
The surgery itself is never physically described in the novel — it functions as threshold rather than place. Different adaptations construct it differently: the manga appears to treat it as earth-embedded; the anime situates it underground; academic analysis reads it as purely metaphorical — the "surgery" is Katita's conceptual work on Leif, not a building.[2][citation needed]
The surgery's adaptive indeterminacy mirrors the glitch itself: one's interpretation of the narrative transition between halves determines whether the surgery is real (a place Leif travels to), hallucinatory, or both at once.
