identical

This article concerns recurrence in *Beach Surgery*. For narrative paradox, see the glitch.

In Beach Surgery, **identical** names the nature of the cosmic loop—not similar or echoing, but absolutely, microscopically identical. The narrator observes: "There is one side to a coin, and it goes the whole way around." Each cycle retraces itself. Leif and Katita awaken in identical configurations; the mechanical seagull descends; the instant photographs emerge. Yet identity forbids variation—and thereby forbids escape. Paradoxically, it permits hope: if the loop is truly identical, only absolute refusal can shatter it. Katita's incantation—"we can do it we can do it we can do it we—"—is not optimistic variation but the conjuration of one who understands that only absolute precision breaks absolute identity. Adaptations splinter this concept between fatalism, sacred incompleteness, and doctrine of refusal. The leather enough hypothesis proposes Katita's armour recurs identically because there is "enough leather for a dozen suits, stitched in advance." The Single Body Hypothesis argues Leif and Katita are one consciousness split identically, one side of the coin reflected infinitely.
