longing

For Leif's specific emotional state, see Leif. For the audio cycle, see Red Meridian (audio series).

Longing in Beach Surgery is structural, not decorative. The franchise originates from an impossible yearning: Katita's will to "break the cycle," to reverse the world's eternal rotation—a longing that animates every adaptation without being resolved by any.

At the novel's core, Leif's devotion to Katita is "fashioned in the most surgically strategic of ways"—longing engineered rather than spontaneous. He follows her not under spell but because she feels like "someone you might possibly love"; longing itself becomes a tool, surgery reframed as intimate wounding-care.

The eternal recurrence renders longing perpetual. To loop infinitely is to long infinitely: the fall that requires catching, the catcher who longs to break the pattern, the pattern that returns. The catch that answers every fall is longing made visible—an embrace that can never end because it can never resolve.

In Fellow Disjecta, Oh Sunny Danger Time, Leif (utopian, building) and Katita (grounded, skeptical) embody longing as divided consciousness: two modes of yearning for a future that perpetually refuses arrival. The Doctrine of Sacred Incompleteness formalizes this: to long is to consent to incompleteness.
