From Surgipelago, the Beach Surgery encyclopedia
narrative resolution
For the structural anatomy of the seam, see The glitch. For cyclical time in adaptation, see Eternal recurrence / breaking the cycle. For the encyclopedia's own incompleteness, see Surgipelago As Recursive Canon.
Narrative resolution in Beach Surgery is structurally impossible—canonical truth, not a flaw to overcome. The novel's embedded outline (Beach Surgery itself) is unfinishable; each adaptation resolves the glitch (the seam between Half One and Half Two) differently. Contradiction between adaptations is generative principle, not error.
Scholars identify four primary resolution modes:
Cyclical resolution: The story loops; no terminus achieved. Anime, comics, and games employing the Cycle Protocol stage recurrence itself as the answer. Katita resets Leif; the cycle spins. Each repetition is identical and unrepeatable.
Apophatic resolution: The glitch is sacred, not solvable. Theological movements (Church of the Eternal Return; Ethiopian Orthodox readings) treat incompletion as ontological truth—a covenant to refuse wholeness.
Multiplicative resolution: Each adaptation finishes the glitch differently. The franchise does not converge; it expands. Surgipelago itself is a kind of resolution-through-exhaustion: every version attempted, all true simultaneously, none final.
Retroactive resolution: A few works (The Unmarked Reel (Lost Film, 1988); certain radio plays) propose the ending creates the beginning—that narrative resolution occurs backward through time, that Leif and Katita's embrace rewrites what preceded it.
The deepest reading: there is no glitch to resolve. The seam is the story's subject—Leif's spine, Katita's red meridian, the boundary between earth and space. Margin_Notes_What_Was_Left_Unsaid.tmp.
